Basic ingredients: Katarina Willingham’s lifelong passion for cooking inspired her to set up Lemon & Soul, having earned her stripes at the Billingsgate Seafood School and The Cook Academy nearby in Hampshire. She now has a platform from which to share her gift for culinary teaching across a variety of classes inspired partly by her Slovakian roots. Any course, from Sweet Baking and Family Dinners to Fish Filleting and Offal, will see a maximum eight students learn to cook two to three meals with drinks included. Classes typically cost £75 and are run between 6.30pm and 9.30pm from the smart premises of Upton’s Butchers in Southampton. Some specialist workshops such as Sausage Making and Hot and Cold Smoking cost £95 but there are also free classes on occasional Saturdays. An additional venue, the Piccola Roma Restaurant in Bishop’s Waltham has been secured and private tuition can be arranged at student’s homes. In addition to this, the school runs a catering service, conducts corporate classes and organises parties for children, “hens” and friends or family.
They say: Cooking is in my heart and soul and I’m on a mission to inspire everyone from children to adults to fall in love with cooking and appreciate quality food.
We say: Katarina’s enthusiasm for cookery is evident in the sheer variety of recipes that feature on her school’s website. What comes across here is food that is fresh, exciting, simple yet elegant and the sort of dishes that most culinary curious people would be keen to emulate.
