Harmony House Cookery School

Basic ingredients: Local chef Hilary Finney (right) runs this neat school from her home/B&B in the pretty village of Stillingfleet, five miles south of York. There are about six classes a month, including a weekend residential course, on a range of themes from Orient and Spice to One for the Boys. Classes are based around a shared marble table and at £90 per person for a day course offer particularly good value.

They say: We want to give you confidence and inspire you to adapt recipes to suit your life style. Food is about sharing and recipes shouldn’t be longwinded with dozens of ingredients. I have recipes that are only three lines long. Our courses embody simply cooked food served with style.

We say: Hilary runs a lovely cottage industry from her adapted kitchen that includes catering, ready-meals and regular recipe spots on local radio.

Hilary and her helpers provide a warm welcome and make you feel at ease as soon as you arrive. There is always plenty of help in the kitchen and whether you are a novice or an experienced cook you never feel under pressure. Everything you need to prepare and cook your chosen dish (or dishes) is provided for you. A great cooking experience in relaxed surroundings. Well worth the cost.

My children 16 ,14 love to go to Hilary’s cookery school – they come home with a mound of delicious food and are as proud as punch .Really well run cookery classes and good value for money!

  3. What a wonderful setting for a cookery school. Hilary is a fantastic coach/teacher and works so well with novice cooks who know very little about cooking right through to people who have lots of experience who just want to tweek their style. I have taken part in 6 courses now and have learnt so much and met some really interesting and inspiring people.

Harmony House has a welcoming and easy feel about and we found it an excellent environment to have fun whilst also learning some key tricks of the trade. The one downside is that the following week we all put on a few pounds putting the theory into practice!
