Basic ingredients: Baking classes at BKD let kids have fun, be messy and nurture their creativity all at once. BKD is run by chorister and Welsh mamma Adelle Frejus at the BKD kitchen and in The Proud Archivist, a well designed gallery/restaurant that’s full of natural light and overlooks Regent’s Canal in London N1. There are hands-on classes for children as young as two years old and everything, from an apron to cutters, is provided including the dreaded cleaning up. Classes range from Little Monster Cupcake Decorating to seasonally-themed gingerbread classes at Christmas. For parents it’s a chance to bond and create memories with their own little monsters while decorating cupcakes with extras such as popping candy, sprinkles, glitter, balls and fondant. The mini bakers leave with six of their own creations to take home and show off. Weekday classes are approximately 1.5 hours long and cost £15 a class (including an accompanying adult). Weekend classes (£20) run for a leisurely two hours and take place at BKD’s own kitchen, also alongside Regent’s Canal. Gift vouchers are also available.
They say: I just love seeing the kids’ imaginations run wild and the enjoyment they get from producing something they are really proud of. The mums enjoy it just as much, it offers a real bonding experience for them and a chance to have a natter with other like-minded mums.
We say: The images of flour-fingered, delighted children and their colourful cakes are a testament to the fun had at BKD. It’s also a great location for having a wander around the boutiques of Shoreditch or a visit to the nearby Geffrye Musuem, which tracks the history of the home and has a cool Kids’ Zone.
